  Motorcycle Rider Course

Basic RiderCourse

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a Beginner / Novice motorcycle rider-training program designed for those with very little or no experience in riding a motorcycle.  The program consists of classroom and hands-on motorcycle training.  The ability to ride a bicycle is necessary for this program.

Classroom adult learning discussions focus on: Rider Responsibility, Risk Awareness, Acceptance and Management, Riding Preparation, and Street Strategies.  At the end of the classroom session, the Knowledge Test is administered.

Range activities include Motorcycle Familiarization, Mounting, Friction Zone, Starting, Stopping, Straight Line Riding, Shifting, Turning, Cornering, Stopping Quickly, Limited Space Maneuvers, Leaning, Obstacles, Lane Changes and Avoiding Hazards.  Each Range Exercise has a specific objective that must be achieved to continue.  At the end of the Range Activities, the Riding Skill Evaluation is conducted.

You will be introduced to the basic knowledge and physical skills to ride a motorcycle.  Attendance, participation and achieving the objectives of each exercise is required throughout the entire program.  You need to know that there is no guarantee of successful completion!

Motorcycles are provided for this combination classroom (6 hours) and hands-on (12 hours) motorcycle rider education program. Loan helmets are also available.

This is the only motorcycle safety/accident prevention course that is approved and accepted by the NYS DMV. Attendance and completion of the course qualifies for the NYS Point and Insurance Reduction Program resulting in a reduction of the base rate for the principal operator of both automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years.

Successful completion requires passing both a Knowledge Test and a Skill Evaluation and qualifies for the NYS DMV Road Test Waiver Option to receive the motorcycle endorsement to the Driver's License without taking the NYS DMV Road Test.

The participant's successful scoring is forwarded to MANYS, Inc. who in turn mails a 3-part form to the participant.  One part is for the participant and should be kept in a safe place. Another part is for the participant's insurance agent to obtain the insurance reduction (copies would be helpful in the event of a change of insurance company).  The last part is taken to a NYS DMV office and turned in with the participant's current valid driver's license and current valid motorcycle permit (and of course a small fee).  The participant receives an Interim License, with motorcycle endorsement, and DMV mails the photo license as is their policy.
